What to Expect in Your First Therapy Session
Starting therapy can feel vulnerable. It’s normal to wonder:
What will I have to share?
Will it be awkward?
What if I cry?
What if I don’t know what to say?
Let me walk you through what typically happens.
Step 1: Getting to Know You
Your first session is mostly about understanding what brought you in and what you hope to gain.
There’s no pressure to share everything at once.
Step 2: Talking About Goals
We’ll explore:
What feels hardest right now?
What would feel different if therapy were helpful?
What does “better” look like for you?
Step 3: Discussing Logistics
We’ll review confidentiality, session frequency, and any questions you have.
You don’t have to perform.
You don’t have to be “good” at therapy.
You just have to show up as you are.
If you’re curious about starting, I’m happy to answer questions and help you decide whether it feels like a good next step.
